Biotech Program: Workforce Training
Fermentation Microbiology Workshop
June 9-10, 2008 (register)

Course Description

Lecture topics include:

  • cell physiology and medium components

  • fermentors and accessories, probes and instrumentation

  • recombinant E. coli protein expression and fermentation

  • oxygen consumption and transfer data analysis

  • scale-up of fermentations: principles, practice and problems

  • case studies illustrating how principles are applied in practice.

Laboratory sessions include:

  • assembly and disassembly of bench top fermentors (2-5 liter) from several different vendors

  • sterilization procedures

  • preparation of inocula and inoculation

  • process sampling

  • measurement of optical density and glucose levels

  • process control

  • harvesting techniques

Workshop laboratory sessions
The workshop laboratory sessions take place in a newly renovated learning facility located within the University of Maryland Bioprocess Scale-up Facility (BSF) on the College Park campus. The BSF houses bioprocessing equipment for process development and optimization ranging from 1 L to 280 L. All workshop participants will examine and test large-scale fermentation equipment while they perform their own experiments on bench-top units provided by several vendors. The format is fast-paced, but plenty of time has been allocated for discussion with workshop faculty.

Case Studies: In response to requests from past attendees, a series of case studies are being added to the curriculum so that participants may gain a greater understanding of how the principles of fermentation are applied in practice. Please see the complete workshop schedule for more details.
