Biotech Program: ENES 489Q

ENES 489Q: Biotechnology/Bioproduction

Course Syllabus

Course Name: Biotechnology / Bioproduction

Course Number: ENES 489Q

Credits: 3

Prerequisites: BSCI 223 or CHEM 231/232; Exceptions with permission of the instructors.

Instructor:

Ben Woodard
Manager, Bioprocess Scale-up Facility
1211 Chemical Engineering Bldg. #090

Course Description: This course teaches the basics of recombinant DNA technology and biopharmaceutical manufacturing:

  • Genetic engineering & gene splicing
  • Current & future trends in biotechnology
  • Creating and maintaining the cell bank
  • Culture media
  • Inoculum development
  • Bioreactors
  • Process control strategy
  • Cell harvesting
  • Product recovery & purification
  • Process chromatography
  • Product concentration
  • Formulation
  • Fill & finish

Course Schedule: This 3-credit Winter Term course will meet five afternoons per week, for three weeks from January 3 through January 23, 2006, except Martin Luther King Holiday January 16, 2006.

Course Structure: Instruction will combine classroom lectures and practical laboratory exercises.  Students will work through a “production campaign” from expression system to vialed protein product.  The “hands on” experience will be especially valuable to students interested in the growing field of biopharmaceutical production.

Course Policies: Students missing more than one lecture and one lab will receive an incomplete grade.  There will be a 15 minute grace period for late arrivals due to weather conditions only.  Classes, quizzes, lab practicals and exams missed due to Campus closure will be made up the following morning beginning at 9:00 AM.  Lectures are structured around student participation.  All students are expected to take part in discussions and play an active role during laboratory exercises.

Texts: "Bioprocess Engineering, Basic Concepts," 2nd Edition, Michael L. Shuler and Fikret Kargi, Prentice Hall, 2001. ISBN: 0-13-081908-5.  Course notes.

Additional Materials: Students must supply lab coat, safety eye glasses, laboratory notebook.
